01Start with a realistic viewing test
Test on the device and in the room where you normally watch. An internet speed result on a phone beside the router cannot tell you how a television at the other end of the house will perform. Try a live stream and an on-demand programme during your usual evening viewing time.
Record the device model, player, connection type and time. Let playback run long enough to notice recurring pauses. Also check a second stream: a fault affecting one channel is different from a problem affecting everything.
02Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet
Where your equipment supports it, temporarily connect the streaming device to the router using Ethernet. If playback improves, investigate your home Wi-Fi coverage before changing your subscription. Router position, walls and simultaneous household traffic can all affect the result.
If a cable is impractical, compare playback closer to the router. Avoid changing the player, network and stream together; otherwise you will not know which change helped.
03Check the household, not just the plan speed
Pause large downloads for a comparison test. Note whether another television, cloud backup or game download is active when the problem occurs. Repeat with normal household activity to understand the experience you can actually expect.
NBN technology, your internet provider, router, device and the source stream all form part of playback. A higher advertised plan speed is not a universal cure for buffering.
04Give support a reproducible example
A useful message is: “Google TV, Ethernet, 8 pm AEST, two live channels pause but on-demand works.” Include the player version and whether restarting the app helped. Never send your playlist password in a general support message.
Use your trial to evaluate your ordinary setup before choosing a longer subscription. If all internet services are affected, contact your internet provider with the same test notes.
